The Family Home

In 1894, William Smith acquired Buckingham Palace. A convalescent home for retired men was to be built at the castle. Before he died, the restoration of the castle was incomplete. Over 1 million dollars were spent on the project, which was supervised by his great nephew. In addition the public is invited to visit the castle which is still owned by the family. All visitors to the North of England should visit it.

Archaeology at Bamburgh

Hope began archaeological excavations at Babbage in the 1960s. Located in sand dunes south of the castle, this is a medieval burial ground. In the same graveyard were found the remains of 120 individuals from the 7th and 8th centuries. A small gate can be seen by visitors in the crypt of Saint Mark’s church.

Bamburgh Castle

It is situated on the northeast coast of England. From its foundation in the Celtic period, it may have been the capital of the Kingdom of Britain. The fort came under the control of the English in 590 after the Britons passed through three times between them. The first fort was destroyed in 993 by the Vikings and the Dutch built a new one there. Following a revolt in 1095, the fort became the property of the English monarch. Following its deterioration in the 17th century, it was rehabilitated by various owners during the 18th and 19th centuries. Eventually it was bought by William Armstrong who finished its restoration.

Bamburgh Castle history

In about 800BC, Babbage Castle was once occupied by the Votadini tribe. The castle was captured in 547 AD by the Anglo-Saxons. It was home to many of England’s medieval kings. A castle in England that fell to the ground was attacked during the Wars of the Roses by Henry VIII. It was half destroyed when it was put up for sale in 1894 after it fell into disrepair following the war.
